Abstract: Computational psychiatry is a rapid growing field at the intersection of engineering, neuroscience, and psychiatry. Computational approaches have the potential to provide mechanistic insights into complex patterns of clinical dysfunction in mental disorders. Computational techniques can be used in a wide variety of contexts in psychiatry. This talk will focus on computational approaches to neuromodulation and neuroimaging in psychiatry. First, a computational framework for the rational dosing of electric and magnetic seizure therapy, informed by the biophysics of transcranial brain stimulation, will be presented. I will discuss compelling evidence for the potential of using electric field simulation as a way to personalize convulsive therapy and reduce its side effects. Second, a whole-brain computational modeling approach using empirical neuroimaging data for understanding the link between structural and functional brain connectivity, and the performance of simulated functional networks in graph theoretical analysis will be presented. I will discuss how whole-brain computational models could be used to help our understanding of the mechanistic causes of psychiatric disorders.
