Abstract: In this presentation, we will share our experience using two novel diffusion MRI techniques -- diffusion basis spectrum imaging (DBSI) and diffusion functional magnetic resonance imaging (Diffusion fMRI) -- to assess optic nerve pathology and function. Specifically, we will demonstrate how diffusion MR signal patterns match structural changes associated with functional activation and pathologies of the optic nerve. The successful applications of DBSI and diffusion fMRI in rodents will be described. Technical difficulties in translating DBSI and diffusion fMRI to human optic nerve will also be discussed.
